Please be aware that the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (House bill HR4173) contains a "Trojan Horse" (reportedly inserted by Henry Waxman D-CA). In essence, it give the FTC almost unlimited new powers to arbitrarily regulate consumer claims and advertising, including those that are completely unrelated to banking and investments. This broad new authority could be used to get around the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, the legislation governing dietary supplement regulation by the FDA that protects public access to these products.
With this power the FTC would no longer be banned from unilaterally superimposing tough new rules for dietary supplement products labels and ads. I could go on and on about what could happen, but as I know you are all intelligent people, I know you can imagine.
Take action now - contact your US senators to request that they oppose broad new powers for the FTC in the financial reform bill. The senate bill is S.3217. This bill does not yet contain the FTC language, bu there are reports that an amendment will add that into the senate bill.
